He'd found a scrap of paper in the witch's gingerbread house that said "Sometimes it is wise to think backwards", which was one clue, and Ifnkovhgroghprm told him the same thing, himself--that he needed to think backwards, and that if he couldn't, then he was an, er...alphabetical imbecile, I think, as he put it.
